Food and Drugs Supervisory Agency (or in the Indonesian language is called: BPOM = "Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan") has conducted testing of all instant noodles products circulating in Indonesian. The result of all the listed brands are safe for consumption.

"Based on laboratory test results, concluded that instant noodle products listed and circulated in Indonesia to meet the applicable standards and requirements, and declared safe for consumption," said Dra Kustantinah, Apt, M.App.Sc, Head BPOM RI.

BPOM has conducted surveillance sampling and testing of various brands of instant noodles from the market in 21 provinces related to security issues instant noodle preservative.

The test results on the content of methyl p-hydroxybenzoate (methylparaben) in 158 samples of soy sauce in the noodles is: 96 samples containing methylparaben does not exceed 250 mg / kg (maximum allowable limit), while 62 samples did not contain methylparaben.

In addition, during the first semester of 2010, has been making and testing a number of 323 items listed instant noodle samples from circulation. The test results showed that the soy sauce samples that are in one package with instant noodles, containing methylparaben does not exceed 250 mg / kg.

BPOM set the maximum use of methylparaben 250 mg / kg product, while the CAC set a limit on the maximum use of the methylparaben is at 1000 mg / kg of product.

Allimentarius Codex Standards Committee (CAC) and scientific studies on health risks, and in accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Health No. 722/1988 on Food Supplement Ingredients, that methylparaben can be used as a preservative for the product or soy sauce in Indonesia.

In addition, based on the database of the Select Committee on Generally Recognize As Safe (GRAS) Substances Reviews, note that there is no evidence of danger of the use of methylparaben as a preservative in processed food is used throughout the standards and not exceed the maximum limit allowed.

"POM RI in accordance with the duties and responsibilities have been and continue to take post-market surveillance, such as focusing on processed food samples randomly and testing labs, including instant noodles, which circulate in the market," said Dra Kustantinah.
